Huge Hailstones!

Megacryometeors in the Bible?

"And huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men; and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, because its plague was extremely severe."

Revelation 16:21 (nasb)

This has always seemed like a far-out, science fiction type Bible verse. This just seemed impossible.

It doesn't seem so far fetched anymore........ Take a look at what scientists are calling "megacryometeors", an increasing phenomenon that some are blaming on global warming!

First, here are a couple of pictures. Notice the "scale" on the first photo. It is 15cm (or 5.9 inches), making that a huge piece of ice! My guess is that chunk was about 2ft in diameter!

Falling ice chunks hit Iowa neighborhood
July 27, 2007
DUBUQUE, Iowa --Large chunks of ice, one of them reportedly about 50 pounds, fell from the sky in this northeast Iowa city, smashing through a woman's roof and tearing through nearby trees.

"It sounded like a bomb!" 78-year-old Jan Kenkel said. She said she was standing in her kitchen when an ice chunk crashed through her roof at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. "I jumped about a foot!"

She traced the damage to her television room, where she found a messy pile of insulation, bits of ceiling, splintered wood and about 50 pounds of solid ice.

Karle and Mary Beth Wigginton, who live a block away, heard a loud "whoosh" coming through the trees. They discovered several large chunks of ice in front of their home and some smaller ones in the yard and in the street.

"I could see where branches were shredded, which told me it was definitely coming out of the sky," Karle Wigginton said.

He estimated the original chunk of ice was the size of a basketball. "It was pure white," he said. "The main parts I picked up were very smooth."

Elizabeth Cory, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said investigators would contact Kenkel to try to determine the source of the ice.

"It is very uncommon for something like this to come from an aircraft," Cory said. "That is really unusual if it is pure white ice, especially at this time of year."

A megacryometeor:
Is a very large chunk of ice, which, despite sharing many textural, hydro-chemical and isotopic features detected in large hailstones, are formed under unusual atmospheric conditions which clearly differ from those of the cumulonimbus clouds scenario (i.e. clear-sky conditions). They are sometimes called huge hailstones, but do not need to form in thunderstorms. Jesus Martinez-Frias, a planetary geologist of the Center for Astrobiology in Madrid pioneered research on megacryometeors in January 2000, after ice chunks weighing up to 6.6 pounds rained on Spain out of cloudless skies for 10 days.
Martínez-Frías determined the objects in Spain were free of urine, feces, and disinfecting solutions, so it was determined that its source was not an airplane's frozen waste water. In fact, at the times of several of the events, the official records of air traffic control showed no airplanes in the skies over the areas in question.

Some scientists believe that the recent increase in the frequency of these megacryometeors worldwide may be due to the effects of global warming.

Since the year 2000 more than 50 megacryometeors have been recorded. They vary in size between 0.5 kg (1.1lbs) to over 200 kg. (440 lb) One was measured in Brazil as 220 kg. (484 lbs!!!)
