Russia and the North Pole

Russia to Plant Flag at North Pole
(Excerpts only, complete article here: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/08/01/arctic.grab.ap/)

An expedition aimed at strengthening Russia's claim to much of the oil and gas wealth beneath the Arctic Ocean reached the North Pole on Wednesday, and preparations immediately began for two mini-submarines to drop a capsule containing a Russian flag to the sea floor.

The voyage, led by noted polar explorer and Russian legislator Artur Chilingarov, has some scientific goals, including the study of Arctic plants and animals. But its chief goal appears to be advancing Russia's political and economic influence by strengthening its legal claims to the gas and oil deposits thought to lie beneath the Arctic sea floor.

The symbolic gesture, along with geologic data being gathered by expedition scientists, is intended to prop up Moscow's claims to more than 460,000 square miles of the Arctic shelf -- which by some estimates may contain 10 billion tons of oil and gas deposits.

About 100 scientists aboard the Akademik Fyodorov are looking for evidence that the Lomonosov Ridge -- a 1,240-mile underwater mountain range that crosses the polar region -- is a geologic extension of Russia, and therefore can be claimed by it under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Denmark hopes to prove that the Lomonosov Ridge is an extension of the Danish territory of Greenland, not Russia. Canada, meanwhile, plans to spend $7 billion to build and operate up to eight Arctic patrol ships in a bid to help protect its sovereignty.

The U.S. Congress is considering an $8.7 billion budget reauthorization bill for the U.S. Coast Guard that includes $72.96 million to operate and maintain the nation's three existing polar icebreakers. The bill also authorizes the Coast Guard to construct two new vessels.

Hail storm buries Mexican town just over the border
July 20, 2007 05:40 PM

Here are pictures of an incredible hail storm that hit the town of Cananea Sonoroa, Mexico.

"I was talking with my mother this morning," writes international viewer Ing. Gardner, "and she says that in her whole life she didn't remember something like yesterday ever happening in Cananea, and she's almost 80 years old!!!" You can see, hail the size of golf balls and bigger fell upon the town, along wth flooding rain.

"There was a lot of damage caused by the hailstorm," writes Ing. Gardner. "It lasted more than one hour and it was really scary. Lots of cars got their windshields broken and many houses were flooded."

40 Years Ago Today
on the 26th of Tammuz
"Today, Thursday, the 26th of Tammuz, marks the 40th anniversary of a moving ceremony that began in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem and ended on the Mt. of Olives. Some 40 fighters and others who were killed in the battle for Old Jerusalem in 1948 had been buried in a pit there, because of the siege; in 1967, after the city was liberated and unified, they were reburied on the Mt. of Olives."

Incredible Archaelogical Discovery

Tiny tablet provides proof for Old Testament
(By Nigel Reynolds, 11/07/2007)

"The sound of unbridled joy seldom breaks the quiet of the British Museum's great Arched Room, which holds its collection of 130,000 Assyrian cuneiform tablets, dating back 5,000 years. But Michael Jursa, a visiting professor from Vienna, let out such a cry last Thursday. He had made what has been called the most important find in Biblical archaeology for 100 years, a discovery that supports the view that the historical books of the Old Testament are based on fact.

Searching for Babylonian financial accounts among the tablets, Prof Jursa suddenly came across a name he half remembered - Nabu-sharrussu-ukin, described there in a hand 2,500 years old, as "the chief eunuch" of Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon.

Prof Jursa, an Assyriologist, checked the Old Testament and there in chapter 39 of the Book of Jeremiah, he found, spelled differently, the same name - Nebo-Sarsekim.

Nebo-Sarsekim, according to Jeremiah, was Nebuchadnezzar II's "chief officer" and was with him at the siege of Jerusalem in 587 BC, when the Babylonians overran the city.

The small tablet, the size of "a packet of 10 cigarettes" according to Irving Finkel, a British Museum expert, is a bill of receipt acknowledging Nabu-sharrussu-ukin's payment of 0.75 kg of gold to a temple in Babylon.

The tablet is dated to the 10th year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II, 595BC, 12 years before the siege of Jerusalem.

"This is a fantastic discovery, a world-class find," Dr Finkel said yesterday. "If Nebo-Sarsekim existed, which other lesser figures in the Old Testament existed? A throwaway detail in the Old Testament turns out to be accurate and true. I think that it means that the whole of the narrative of Jeremiah takes on a new kind of power."

The full translation of the tablet reads: (Regarding) 1.5 minas (0.75 kg) of gold, the property of Nabu-sharrussu-ukin, the chief eunuch, which he sent via Arad-Banitu the eunuch to [the temple] Esangila: Arad-Banitu has delivered [it] to Esangila. In the presence of Bel-usat, son of Alpaya, the royal bodyguard, [and of] Nadin, son of Marduk-zer-ibni. Month XI, day 18, year 10 [of] Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon."

Middle East Peacemaker?

"Tony Blair has given his strongest indication yet that he is ready to take up a role looking for peace in the Middle East when he retires as Prime Minister on Wednesday.

Widespread reports have suggested Mr Blair will soon be appointed the envoy for the so-called Quartet of the US, EU, UN and Russia which is seeking to establish peace in the region based on a "road map" towards two states of Israel and Palestine."

What on Earth is Russia Up To?
Interesting news has been coming out of Russia lately! I know Putin is on his way "out", just like Blair and Bush, perhaps this is his one big push for "legacy" before he becomes political history? At any rate, it will be VERY interesting to see who takes over after he is gone. I know economically Russia has been doing VERY well after they instituted a "flat tax" a few years ago so they have plenty of money with which to build their power base. Let's watch this one!!

Putin calls for New Financial World Order

By Neil Buckley and Catherine Belton in St Petersburg
Link HERE

"Russian president Vladimir Putin called on Sunday for a radical overhaul of the world’s financial and trade institutions to reflect the growing economic power of emerging market countries including Russia.

Mr Putin said the world needed to create a new international financial architecture to replace an existing model that had become “archaic, undemocratic and unwieldy”.

His apparent challenge to western dominance of the world economic order came at a forum in St Petersburg designed to showcase the country’s economic recovery. Among 6,000 delegates at the biggest business forum ever held in post Soviet Russia were scores of international chief executives including heads of Deutsche Bank, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, NestlĂ©, Chevron, Siemens and Coca Cola.

Business deals worth more than $4bn were signed at the conference including an order by Aeroflot for Boeing jets as executives said they were continuing to invest in Russia despite deteriorating relations with the west.

Mr Putin’s hosting of the forum capped a week in which he dominated the international stage. He warned last Monday that Russia might target nuclear missiles at Europe if the US built a missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, then offered a compromise at the G8 summit involving switching part of the US system to Azerbaijan.

His speech on financial institutions suggested that, along with an aggressive recent campaign against US “unilateralism” in foreign policy, he was also seeking to challenge western dominance of the world economic order."

Russia bullies BP
How the aggressive behavior of the world's second largest exporter could drive prices higher for everyone.
By Steve Hargreaves, CNNMoney.com staff writer
(http://money.cnn.com/2007/06/01/news/international/russia_bp/index.htm)

"Russia is again flexing its energy muscle.

On Friday, reports said Russia may cancel a contract it has with BP to develop a huge natural gas field in the middle of the country, claiming BP wasn't producing enough gas at the project.

To bypass some of its pesky former satellite states, Russia may expand ship-borne energy exports in Novorossiysk and add them in Murmansk.

The vast majority of Russia's energy flows West to Europe via pipeline, but the country is currently building a pipeline east across Siberia to serve the fast growing Asian market.

This would be the latest in a string of incidents generally interpreted as Russia strong-arming its partners into deals more favorable to the government. These moves, analysts say, could hurt worldwide production and drive up energy costs for consumers everywhere.

Earlier this winter, the Kremlin shut off gas supplies to Europe after a dispute with Belarus, through which the pipeline passes. That dustup echoed a similar spat with Ukraine the previous winter.

As evidenced by Friday's BP news, private oil companies have also felt the Kremlin's wrath. In December, a consortium led by Royal Dutch Shell agreed to sell its majority stake in the $20 billion Sakhalin II project off eastern Siberia to Gazprom, Russia's state-controlled natural gas firm, after facing heightened scrutiny from Russian regulators that many saw as politically motivated.

The French energy company Total has run into a similar problem with a project near the Barents Sea.

And then there's the Yukos affair. In October 2003, the head of the giant private energy company was arrested and eventually jailed for tax evasion, though most observers say his real crime was challenging the political power of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Most of Yukos' assets have since gone to state-controlled oil company Rosneft, at what many said was a considerable discount."

Gazprom completes Sakhalin-2 takeover
Bloomberg News
(http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/18/news/shell.php)

"Gazprom, the Russian state-run gas company, on Wednesday completed the purchase of its controlling share in the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project, buying half the stakes owned by Royal Dutch Shell, Mitsui and Mitsubishi for $7.45 billion.

Gazprom will now hold 50 percent plus one share in the project, while Shell has 27.5 percent, Mitsui 12.5 percent and Mitsubishi 10 percent, Shell said in a statement upon signing the agreement in Moscow."

Miracles and the Six Day War

What do you believe concerning the victory of the Six Day War? Some see the hand of the Almighty in those events of forty years ago. Israel was NOT the one most would have placed their bets on to win that war! In fact, it appears that the only reason they won was due to some bumbling on the part of the Egyptian air force... or was it?

A very key event took place the morning of June 5, 1967 when Jordanian radar detected the Israeli air force taking off. A special warning code was sent to Cairo but the decoding officer used the wrong day's code and failed to decipher the vital information. In the mean time, the Israeli Air Force was able to essentially destroy the Egyptian Air Force on the ground, which affected the entire outcome of the war!

On analysis, there were other little mis-steps by the Egyptians here and there leading to an Israeli victory. So do you think this was just due to sloppy war strategy, human error, maybe just plain "coincidence"... or was perhaps the LORD intervening on behalf of a nation with whom He still had plans?

Author Joel Rosenberg stated it this way:
"For evangelical Christians, the Six Day War was a huge moment of seeing God's Hand intervene on behalf of the Jewish People. That's what was so extraordinary, that you had this moment where Arab/Islamic leaders were saying we're going to throw the Jews into the sea and it looked like another holocaust was immanent. Suddenly, in six days, the Jewish people defended themselves, destroyed their enemies, tripled their land; recaptured control of Jerusalem for the first time in 2,000 years and on the seventh day they rested. That just sounded way too Biblical for evangelicals all over the planet and they rejoiced with the Jewish people."

Even Moshe Dayan, commander of the Israeli forces during that time, who was "minimally religious" at best, was overcome with emotion as he went to the Western Wall and slipped a note into a crack in the stone. After he left, a reporter who took notice of the incident, took the note and saw that it read, "'This is from God. It's wondrous in our eyes," (a verse from Psalms.)

It has now been FORTY YEARS since that incredible point in history.... forty is a VERY interesting number on God's time table! Let's take a quick look at that number in Scripture. Perhaps it will help us as we watch and try to understand what God may be doing in the Middle-east.

Be diligent to keep your eyes open because...
God is at Work in Our World!!
BEE

FORTY
Forty is an important number in scripture due to it's frequent use and the fact that it is associated with a period of probation, trial, or sometimes "chastisement" (as opposed to judgment) of God's Children. It also appears to be associated with a time of enlarged dominion, or a renewed or extended rule.

Bullinger saw 15 such periods of forty in scripture:

* Forty Years of Probation by Trial:
Israel in the wilderness, Deut 8:2-5; Psa 95:10; Acts 13:18
(the third 40 of Moses' life, 120 years).
Israel from the crucifixion to the destruction of Jerusalem.

* Forty Years of Probation by Prosperity in Deliverance and Rest:
under Othniel, Judg 3:11,
under Barak, Judg 5:31,
under Gideon, Judg 8:28.

* Forty Years of Probation by Prosperity in Enlarged Dominion:
under David, 2 Sam 5:4,
under Solomon, 1 Kings 11:42,
under Jeroboam II. See 2 Kings 12:17,18, 13:3,5,7,22,25, 14:12-14,23,28,
under Jehoash, 2 Kings 12:1,
under Joash, 2 Chron 24:1.

* Forty Years of Probation by Humiliation and Servitude:
Israel under the Philistines, Judg 13:1.
Israel in the time of Eli, 1 Sam 4:18.
Israel under Saul, Acts 13:21.

* Forty Years of Probation by Waiting:
Moses in Egypt, Acts 7:23.
Moses in Midian, Acts 7:30

Jerusalem Day 2007 Flash Flood

I had debated whether or not to post on this topic lest someone think I was making "something out of nothing". But the fact of the matter is this was an unusual occurrence. This was not the "rainy season" for Jerusalem, this came upon them suddenly out of a clear sky. The weather men had no idea... and there was not only sudden heavy rain and flash flooding, but hail also! All of this on such an historic day... the 40th anniversary of when Israel took back Jerusalem and the Temple mount!! How could I ignore this? Especially, when I am keenly watching for signs of the Lord at work in our world today!

I am watching and waiting, listening and learning... I want to be ready when I hear Him whisper to me in a still small voice and I want to reply "here I am Lord"!

1Kings 19:11-13 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave.

So, here is the "complete documentation" of the Jerusalem Day storm and flash flood. Including the radar sequence, news articles, blog links and pictures! I do not know if this was a warning of coming judgment or not. I will leave that for the Lord to make plain in His time. I will only report.. and let you decide.

Rain on Jerusalem's parade
Unexpected storm disrupts celebrations for Jerusalem Day, causes massive flooding
(05.16.07, 17:33 / Israel News)
"The official ceremony to mark the 40 year anniversary of the unification of Jerusalem was canceled, Wednesday afternoon, due to an unexpected storm. City residents told Ynet of torrential downpours and heavy hail – definitely not summer weather in Israel."

"Natanel Feldman, who was in the Old City when the storm broke said, "the central street is totally flooded. Someone here told me that, even in the winter, he can't recall having seen a storm like this."

"It's hard to imagine that, only a few hours ago, it was warm and sunny. Now I hear thunder and lightning. It's like winter. These rains are bizarre."

"It began as an ordinary day. Warm, even," recounted Jerusalem resident Moshe Vilner. "All of a sudden, it began raining and hailing." Resident Dov Ayalon said that "cars got stuck in the gathering waters…In addition, sewage systems also overflowed."

"This is extremely heavy hail," said a resident named Liron. "It's accumulating on the ground. People in Jerusalem are in shock."

Heavy rains dampen Jerusalem Day

"It was the first time since Israel liberated the eastern half of Jerusalem from Jordanian occupation that Jerusalem Day events were affected by rain.

Those familiar with Israel will know that such heavy rain in mid-to-late May is rare, if not unprecedented.

Religious commentators provided a range of reasons for the extraordinary downpour on a day that was supposed to be filled with joyous outdoor celebration marking what many view as a divine restoration of Jerusalem to Israel.

On one side of the spectrum, some Israelis explained that even the heavens had opened up to bless Jerusalem on its special day. Rain is precious in this arid region that goes without precipitation for months during the summer.

Others opined that God was not going to allow Jerusalem to celebrate while the residents of the southern town of Sderot wept and fled their homes under a deluge of Palestinian rockets. Israel's leadership has been harshly criticized for effectively abandoning the defense of Sderot, while focusing such lavish attention on matters like Jerusalem Day."

An interesting coincidence?
Just a few days before... this article was posted on INN. The head of a branch of the Islamic Movement wanted to "flood" the Temple Mount with Muslims during this time. Could it be that God was essentially saying "You want to see flood... I will show you a flood??!! (On that same day 40 years ago Moshe Dayan took the Temple Mount but then control was given up to the Muslims.)

Islamic Movement Initiates Effort to Flood Temple Mount
(http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/122410)
by Nissan Ratzlav-Katz
(IsraelNN.com) Sheikh Raad Salah, the head of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement, has been working hard to ensure that thousands of Muslims will arrive in Jerusalem's Old City every day to pray in the Al-Aksa mosque, located on the Temple Mount. Salah has been talking with Arab clan leaders from Jerusalem and its environs in an effort to convince them to take turns bringing their entire extended families to the mosque.

"Salah expressed his conviction that Jerusalem will fall into Muslim hands by "Heavenly promise." He also said that in such a conquest, no sign of a Jewish presence will remain."
"Sheikh Raad Salah, leader of the northern Israel branch of the Islamic Movement, has launched an effort to ensure Muslim control over Jerusalem's Temple Mount, and eventually the entire city.

Salah, reported Israel National News, is urging Israeli Arab Muslims from around the country to come to Jerusalem on a rotating schedule so that mass Muslim prayers can be held at the Temple Mount on a daily basis.

Additionally, Salah wants all mosques in the Jerusalem area to be closed on Fridays so that local Muslims are forced to congregate at the Temple Mount to recite traditional Islamic prayers and hear what are typically venomous anti-Israel sermons."
